Can you transform a line of work, not just equip it?
Yes, and that is often where the real value lies. Equipping means doing the same thing faster. Transforming means asking whether the step still needs to exist, or whether the service could be delivered differently.

What is going on.
Most AI projects equip an existing line of work: the same task, done faster. Data entry is automated, writing is speeded up, files are summarised. It is useful, and it is often the first step.
Transforming goes further. It means asking why the step exists, whether it is still needed when information flows differently, or whether the service delivered to the customer could take another form. That question unsettles habits, roles and sometimes the boundaries between departments. It is also where the gains your competitors will not easily copy are to be found.
What we observe.
- Speeding up a pointless step does not make it useful. Many tasks exist to make up for a flaw elsewhere in the flow.
- Transformation affects roles, not just tools. It requires redefining who does what, and that has to be prepared with the teams.
- The business often knows what could change. It has simply never been asked from that angle.
What you can do right now.
- For a given line of work, list the tasks and ask, for each one, why it exists.
- Imagine with the teams the service they would deliver if information arrived complete and on time.
- Choose a limited but real transformation, rather than equipping everyone across the board.
